Logbooks Doesn’t Leave Anything to Chance
There’s nothing like the rush of a shift change, when the current crew is quickly winding down to leave after a long day or night, and a new crew is on its way in eager to quickly ramp up. But imagine if in all this rush of activity, something is missed or forgotten. Perhaps there’s a safety hazard one shift fails to log that results in an accident hours later. Or maybe a repair that needs to be made, but isn’t communicated, results in unexpected downtime, and loss of time and money.
When facilities in all types of industries—from life sciences and refinery, to gas and utilities and power—leave their fate in the hands of hard copy logbooks, they’re taking a serious chance. Sometimes they will win, and nothing will happen, and sometimes they’ll lose, and these losses are usually big. For example, did you know that 60 percent of all accidents or serious incidents at operating plants occur within 30 minutes of a shift change or as a direct result of poor or incorrect shift handover information? Additionally, it costs a facility $300,000 a year for QA to check and chase down missing entries in hard copy logbooks. The actual cost, when issues arise, can be double.
Worse yet, many facilities today don’t even have a formal hard copy logbook and process in place. They rely on word-of-mouth, notepads, Post-It notes and the like. Even for the smartest, most talented of your team members, without a formal process in place, they’ll be hard-pressed to remember to jot down and communicate everything that’s happened during a shift, including quality issues and safety hazards that arise and need resolving. They will also have no way of making historical comparisons—for instance, how many times a valve has been maintained or failed in the last six months or six years. Not to mention no way to validate your data and ultimately protect your company if ever audited by a regulatory organization, like the FDA. Talk about taking a chance!
Logbooks by Emerson is an innovative solution that can change all that by bridging communication between operating teams, increasing efficiency, better predicting maintenance needs and accessing quality metrics. This electronic database of operator log entries can be embedded in the DeltaV distributed control system interface to improve task management and enable more effective shift handovers with real-time visibility to active entries. It will even send you reminders and escalate any issues if they are not resolved. Users can access Logbooks directly from their DeltaV workstations to view shift-based dashboards that highlight relevant log entries for the operations team. A standalone Syncade version of Logbooks is also available for use on a variety of system architectures.
With Logbooks, operation managers find that automating the event logging process significantly aids the communication process between working teams. It allows them immediate access to operational logs and event history at the push of a button. This:
- improves task management
- increases quality
- reduces risk and maintenance
- helps resolve issues quickly
- increases operator availability to respond to process demands
